Tiny Homes

I have done quite a lot of research this year, in search of the best option for my family to down size and hopefully get on the road. One of the options that I was considering was tiny houses. They are so freaking cute and really a lot bigger on the inside (yes, my kids watch Doctor Who LOL). I thought that if we bought one built on a trailer that we could still travel. But, those are so expensive. For the cost of the house, we could purchase a brand new RV with all the upgrades we wanted! Most of the companies around where we live either build them out on your land, (we don’t own land, so no to that one) or they deliver them to you. Either way, they have to be put on land that you own. The shells are massively less expensive but we do not have any experience needed to finish them out. Then there are the laws here governing where you can live in them.

Now, while we didn’t feel the tiny homes were good for our family, does not mean that they are bad for everyone. There are many, many people that are perfectly happy in their tiny houses. And there are many ways in which people can save money by living in them. While the homes are expensive to buy, you can still save in the long run on not having a mortgage or rent payment. In fact, tiny home owners generally have more savings and less credit card debt than traditional home owners. They also have the option to save by living on a friend’s or family member’s land instead of buying a plot of land. Energy costs tend to be lower in tiny homes, and they can use solar and gas. Not to mention saving on water by using composting toilets, which are not as gross as most people might think.

So, after all of this, my decision will still be an RV for us, but I really love the idea of the tiny house. I am encouraged by the number of people doing this because it makes it easier for me to believe that we are doing the right thing. Hope you all have a wonderful day!!
